Limpopo’s Matsetela elected WBSC Africa VP

Mashilo Matsetela becomes WBSC Africa vice president, aiming to grow softball through stronger structures and continental events.

LIMPOPO – The president of Softball South Africa (SSA), Mashilo Matsetela, with strong sporting roots in Limpopo, has been elected vice president of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Africa.

The elections took place on October 17 in Bangkok. Matsetela’s financial expertise previously earned him the role of SSA treasurer from 2006 to 2010, as well as the same position at the Limpopo Sport Confederation (LSC).

He believes his new position will help elevate softball across the continent.

Plans to strengthen softball across Africa

“My immediate objective is to ensure WBSC Africa becomes a member of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca). This will also ensure that each WBSC Africa region becomes part of Anoca’s regional structure.

“We aim to stage continental championships for both baseball and softball and strengthen university programmes across Africa. We want university associations from various countries to join the continental mother body and host African championships at that level. More national university teams should also participate internationally, supported by schools’ continental championships.

“We plan to implement a similar strategy with the masters’ divisions,” he said.

Recognised for excellence

During his tenure at LSC, Matsetela was recognised as sports administrator of the year at the Department of Sport awards.

Reflecting on his journey, SSA official Kutumela said when Matsetela assumed his role, he improved the governance of SSA remarkably.

“Under his leadership, SSA was awarded federation of the year in 2018, which is a testament to his capability. His leadership positions softball where it belongs on the international map. Personally, I am proud of him and congratulate him on this outstanding achievement.”
