Basketball programme launches in Seshego to empower youth

The Super Elite Basketball Development Programme has launched in Seshego, aiming to develop young talent and provide structured training in the community.

POLOKWANE –  The Super Elite Basketball Development Programme was successfully launched in Seshego at the basketball courts in Zone 1 on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in youth basketball development.

The programme was hosted and founded by Cecil Nkhwashu, who is also the chairperson of the programme, alongside co-founder Maphala Maila, to serve as multi-faceted tools for social, physical, and personal development.

“The programme’s core purpose extends beyond teaching sport skills as it focuses on fostering unity, improving health, empowering youth through mentorship, and also provides safe environments in both urban and rural settings,” Nkhwashu said.

The event drew strong participation from young athletes, parents, coaches and community stakeholders, highlighting the growing interest in organised sports development.

Nkhwashu added that the programme also aims to nurture basketball talent while promoting discipline, teamwork, leadership, and personal growth.

“The overwhelming support we received on Saturday at the launch confirms that our community is ready for structured basketball development. Our objective is not only to develop skilled basketball players, but to shape disciplined, confident young leaders who can succeed both on and off the court.”

“Your commitment to youth development and community upliftment is deeply appreciated. And thank you to the parents for supporting the children throughout this programme, and most importantly for motivating them to come and join in,” Maila said.

During the programme, the children came in numbers, braved the heat and also got an opportunity to learn a few skills and tricks about basketball.

Training sessions have commenced at the Westenburg basketball courts (next to Westenburg Secondary School), focusing on technical skills, physical conditioning and mental preparation.

Anne Mametja

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
