POLOKWANE – Flora Park Comprehensive High School learner Katlego Mohlala has been selected to represent the Bafana Bafana u/17 team.

Katlego earned his place in the national squad after progressing through three rounds of trials, achieving a goal he has worked hard towards.

A promise to his brother

The talented young footballer said he started playing in Gr 7 after being inspired by his older brother, who recognised his potential.

“I remember watching a soccer match with my brother when he told me he wanted to see me playing on television one day. I promised myself I would never disappoint him and decided to use my talent to become something. I want to be the first person in my family to play professional soccer,” he said.

Books before the ball

Despite his national team selection, Katlego said he remains committed to his education.

“Although I am not doing as well academically as I would like, I am not giving up. I will continue working hard and complete my studies,” he said.

“It starts in the office”

Flora Park Comprehensive High School coach Bongani Mukhuba, who has coached Katlego since last year, believes the young player has a bright future.

He praised Katlego’s dedication, as well as the support of the school’s management and sports department.

“It is our responsibility to prepare talented players for the next level. When you see such talent being identified at a government school, you have to give credit to the school management and the sports desk because success doesn’t just happen on the field. It starts in the office,” said Mukhuba.
