Veteran runner Johannes Mosehla heads to Germany for Berlin Marathon
Comrades Marathon record holder Rakgolo Johannes Mosehla will take his running legacy to the international stage when he participates in the BMW Berlin Marathon in Germany on Sunday.
POLOKWANE – Comrades Marathon record holder Rakgolo Johannes Mosehla will take his running legacy to the international stage when he participates in the BMW Berlin Marathon in Germany on September 27 (Sunday).
Mosehla (84) from Ga-Mogashoa village in Sekhukhune, Limpopo, holds the record as the oldest Comrades Marathon finisher after completing the 2025 race in 11:12:27 at the age of 84.
He will now take on the world-famous 42.195km road race through the streets of Berlin, which is expected to feature more than 56,000 athletes from over 160 countries.
“I’m so proud and honoured that I’ll be representing South Africa on the global stage, let alone at my age. I hope I do inspire someone out there that when you put your mind on something, you will always excell in whatever you do,” he said.
Mosehla’s biggest message is that it is never too late to start. He often emphasises that running is about showing up every day, not about how fast you run.
“Small, consistent training is what builds a strong runner over years. If I can do it at my age, you can do it too. Just start, keep going, and never give up.” – This is a message Mosehla lives by.
The BMW Berlin Marathon is a world-renowned annual road-running and multi-sport event held through the streets of Germany’s capital.
It is one of six races that make up the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors, alongside Tokyo, Boston, London, Chicago and New York City.
Polokwane Athletics Club (PAC) and club manager Thabana Mokgohloa have wished Mosehla all the best ahead of his marathon.
“Rakgolo Mosehla is an inspiration to all of us at PAC and to runners across the country. We are so proud of him for carrying the South African flag to Berlin, and we wish him strength, good health and a successful race,” Mokgohloa said.
Mosehla’s participation continues to inspire generations of runners, proving that age is no barrier to chasing big dreams.
