Penny Penny’s star to rise again

PENNY Penny’s popular album Shaka Bundu, which was first released in 1994, is making waves in the US, especially under Spanish audiences, even before it will officially be released on November 12.

This comes after a US-based company called Awesome Tapes From Africa (ATFA) stocked the album on their shelves for American audiences, nearly 10 years after its first release in 1994.

The ATFA label focuses on African music.

Penny Penny’s album is very popular with online listeners of ATFA who offers some tracks for download.

The album is especially popular with Spanish audiences and it receives a lot of comments on a Spanish website.

Penny Penny, whose real name is Eric Nkovani, said he was very excited about this and could not wait to fly to the US for the launch of the album.

“This means money to me. I will even change my name to Dollar Dollar,” he joked.

Reflecting on some of his failed albums, Penny Penny blamed the local market for poor advertising, saying it was impossible that his music could do so well outside the country yet fail to impress locally. “This could mean that the local market is poor when it comes to advertising,” he said.

His producer, Joe Shirimani, said this latest news could mean good fortune to Penny Penny as other albums like Phindi Shangani and Yogo Yogo could follow provided that his current album with the ATFA did better.

“This could also save us the time and energy of doing another album for their audience as they could simply pick what we already have on the shelves,” he said.

Penny Penny is is no longer a full-time musician.

He is involved in local politics and an ANC ward councillor for ward 13 in Giyani.
