First-ever annual heritage festival held successfully in Limpopo

The Limpopo Heritage Foundation hosted the first annual Limpopo Heritage Festival, which was held from October 14 to October 17, ending with an awards ceremony at the Polokwane Library Gardens auditorium.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Heritage Foundation hosted the first annual Limpopo Heritage Festival, which was held from October 14 to October 17, ending with an awards ceremony at the Polokwane Library Gardens auditorium.

The festival aimed to respond to a high demand of cultural and heritage activities in the province. It was conducted in the form of a competition, with categories such as poetry, dance, music, drama, choir and storytelling.

The CEO of Limpopo Heritage Foundation, California Matheba said: “The main purpose of the festival is to search and expose talent and to empower Limpopo artists who are living in areas on the outskirts of the province.” Performances included artistes from Venda, Giyani, Malamulele, Burgersfort, Jane Furse, Mokopane, Ga-Malebogo and the Polokwane area, he added.

The foundation conducted selection mini-festivals throughout Limpopo to come up with the best groups and individuals specialising in performing arts.

“The festival also honoured two special individuals with awards, who contributed selflessly to the preservation of Limpopo heritage.”

The lifetime award was awarded to Aletta Matshidisho Motimele, a renowned poetry, drama, novels and short story writer for her contribution in preserving the Sepedi language through her radio drama and various books which are being read in secondary school.

The special award was awarded to Thobela FM presenter, Dr Manoko Semenya, for the recognition of her contribution in preserving Sepedi cultural heritage through her MaAfrika Tumelong and Sego sa Mokgako programme.
