POLOKWANE – The auditorium at Library Gardens was filled with laughter last Saturday evening when the play, Golden Divas was staged.
The play was written and directed by Selaelo Maredi in association with Tshukudu Productions, and supported by the Limpopo Arts and Culture Association.
Lethabo Ramokgopa, who was part of the play, said the play captured the challenges faced by all women and how women manage to laugh their way through them, while healing the social ills they faced daily.
“The play tells the story of four friends whose friendship began after they learned that they were dating the same guy. It deals with issues of woman empowerment, gender inequality, relationships and the appraisal of good men whose efforts seem to go unnoticed. The Golden Divas remind the ‘good men’ that they do matter,” she said.
“Golden Divas hopes to amplify the voice of women. This is to reiterate the fact that women are human before they can be classified as ‘women’. This is to bring the attention to men to see women as their peers in the social and cultural environment.”
The cast of Golden Divas is made up of: Phuthego, who is blamed for being a self-proclaimed marriage counsellor, Khanyisile, an unhappily married woman with a vendetta against men, Koloti, an oppressed married woman who eventually finds the strength to tell her husband where to get off, Ntema, a newly married woman who drops men like empty cans if she is not happy and Makwere, Phuthego’s ex and a photographer who would like to support the Golden Divas in their quest to stardom, accompanied by Mpho Petja and Ndumiso Nzama keyboard players.
Maredi is celebrating his 50th year in theatre and the Golden Divas plan to perform all over the province as part of the celebration.
