FOLLOWING the success of the Jackson Hlungwani A New Jerusalem exhibition at the Polokwane Art Museum, the MTN SA Foundation said the exhibition would be extended to the end of this month.
The exhibition provides a retrospective look at the legendary artist’s sculptures.
According to MTN SA Foundation general manager, Kusile Mthunzi-Hairwadzi, the decision to extend the run of the exhibition was taken in view of the importance of Hlungwani’s work.
She said the foundation was also funding an education programme that targetted schools with an educational publication called Art Talk. “This publication teaches children more about their heritage, shows them how to appreciate South African artists and develops development of knowledge about art and its origins,” she said.
“Workshops have been developed and conducted with six local schools. They include a tour around the gallery and participation in various curriculum related art activities. As the main funders, MTN SA Foundation extended its resources for the last two years in support of the museum and exhibition and we have worked closely with the museum to ensure the extension of the exhibition,” Mthunzi-Hairwadzi said.
Managed by renowned guest curator, Nessa Leibhammer, the exhibition, which consists of 45 wood sculptures, prints and tools has been loaned from both public and private collections, including the MTN Art Collection, drawing a comprehensive overview of Hlungwani’s body of work.
The Polokwane Art Museum’s director, Amos Letsoalo said during the extension of the exhibition, visitors will be able to see many of Hlungwani’s famous fish sculptures, including Leaping Fish, Double Fish and Emperor Fish, as well as God’s Leg with Eggs, the Hand of God and Christ Playing Football.
He said the artwork on display was complemented by large photographic images that show Hlungwani carving, teaching and providing inspiration.
The exhibition opening hours are from 09:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday.
