Gauteng Opera opens the doors for young singers

POLOKWANE – The Gauteng Opera Company recently toured Limpopo and held a concert in the city at N.G. Kerk-Oos last Friday.

The concert featured music by Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli and Amici Forever.

Speaking on behalf of Gauteng Opera, partnerships officer Audrey Mekgwe said they spread the joy of opera and educated budding classical music artists on the possibilities of making a career of vocal arts and theatre.

Gauteng Opera visited four districts in the province with the aim of exposing talented young people with an interest in classical music to the art form of opera, as well as to introduce them to Gauteng Opera’s training and development programme.

This programme involves training young singers from previously disadvantaged communities and giving them the opportunity to further their studies as well as to gain experience in the field of vocal performance and theatre.

Gauteng Opera holds auditions for talented singers around the country every year.

The successful candidates are enrolled in the development programme as academy trainees and receive coaching sessions with singing coaches, language lecturers as well as interaction with acclaimed singers, coaches, directors and conductors for three years.

They are also afforded the opportunity to perform as part of the chorus in Gauteng Opera productions.

Attendees of the concert held in Polokwane agreed that it had been a wonderful opportunity. “I can not wait for Gauteng Opera to visit us again. Then we will fill up the hall,” said Annemarie Geldenhuys.
