Rugby players and bikers join forces

The countdown to the annual Westenburg Easter Tournament has begun and this year the Westenburg Rugby Club promises that it will be an event that residents will never forget.

POLOKWANE – The countdown to the annual Westenburg Easter Tournament has begun and this year the Westenburg Rugby Club promises that it will be an event that residents will never forget.

This year the Westenburg Rugby Club joins forces with the Eagle’s Motorcycle-club to up the ante when it comes to entertainment and fun.

Francois Hartlief, chairperson of the Westenburg Rugby Club, says the two bodies share a desire to bring about change in the community and that is why they decided to join hands in making a change.

“This event is to bring the community together and also to get our young people off the streets by competing in different sporting codes. The money raised at the event will be used to finish the Westenburg sports field at Westenburg Secondary School. At the moment there is only one sports facility in Westenburg and this is not enough, because not everyone can practise on the grounds, as there is not enough space. With the new field, children can participate in sport instead of participating in substance abuse and other evils in our community,” Hartlief explains.

The tournament will take place at the Westenburg sports grounds in Buys Street on April 19 and 20. The event will start at 10:00 on Saturday morning and the finals will start at 12:00 on Sunday.

This is the fifth year that the event is held and for the first time in the history of Westenburg, there will be 200 bikers attending the event.

The partnership between the Eagle’s Motorcycle-club and Westenburg Rugby Club is a long term verbal agreement. “For as long as there is an easter tournament, the partnership will continue,” Hartlief said.

Joey Thompson, Eagle’s road captain said residents can look forward to a fun weekend.

“The Eagles will be competing in different sporting codes including a soccer match against members from the Sapa Yopa Motorcycling-club. We will be giving bike rides and there are many other exciting events to look forward to,” says Thompson.

Hartlief says there will be different stalls selling a variety of goods which will include food and drinks.

On the events menu residents can look forward to the following:

• Netball;

• Soccer;

• Dominoes;

• Pool games;

• A potjiekos competition;

• Athletics;

• A last man standing competition;

• Train and bike rides for the children, and

• a performance by the Chemical Reaction Dance Group.

The Polokwane mayor, Freddy Greaver, also confirmed that he will be attending the event.
