THE long wait by the community of Giyani for their own radio station, Giyani Community Radio (GCR 106FM) is finally over.
The station was supposed to be launched in June last year, but the launch was delayed due to the upgrade of the studio.
The studio, which is equipped with the new digital system technology instead of the old analogue system, is now full functional.
“People used to call the station ‘Facebook-radio’ and we want to inform them that Facebook-radio will go live this weekend. Listeners will now be able to tune to it and experience what we were cooking for them while the studio was being upgraded,” said Clifford Moraba, the station’s marketing manager and business developer.
According to Moraba, all that remained was for Eskom to do the electricity capacitation for the station’s transformer as they did not operate on ordinary electricity.
“Transformers need special electricity in order to function, they cannot be run using ordinary electricity,” he said.
Giyani municipal spokesperson, Steve Mavunda said the station would not only benefit the community, but government by making communities aware of the municipality’s services.
“If there is an urgent problem regarding services that need to be sent out to people, we will ask for a slot to address the people,” said Mavunda.
Asked who would fund the running expense of the station, Mavunda said: “The municipality would be bound to leave aside a small budget for the station as it is a community radio station aimed at helping the community and not making a profit”.
