IT WAS a grand affair when the Virtuoso Brass Ensemble held a fundraising concert at the MGM Motors hall on Saturday.

The director of the ensemble, Dukes Mashamaite, said the ensemble was still new to the province and the concert aimed to introduce it to residents while raising money for a trip to Germany in August.

“We appeal to those who can help us with money for our 10-day stay in Germany, where we will be learning more about brass music, to help us. We will share this knowledge with the locals when we return,” said Mashamaite.

He said the ensemble originated from Ga-Ramalapa village in Ga-Matlala and had since established itself in Polokwane, following an official launch at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World last month.

Mashamaite said the ensemble was formed by dedicated musicians and music students. Among them are qualified directors of music, bandmasters, choir conductors and adjudicators who aim to develop and enhance the quality of brass music in the province.

During the concert, which was attended by hundreds of people including representatives of the Polokwane Municipality, the ensemble performed songs such as Pata Pata by the late Miriam Makeba and Kiss and Say Goodbye by Manhattans.
