Lim’s Kekana wins at annual PSL awards

MAMELODI Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Hlompho Kekana is flying the Limpopo flag high.

Kekana walked away with a R50 000 cash prize after winning the Absa Premiership Absa-lutely Awesome Goal of the Season during the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Awards, which were held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Sunday.

He scored a superb goal against Orlando Pirates from 25 yards on February 8 and this goal earned him the nickname “Mr Cramps” after Pirates goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa experienced cramps after he stretched too much in a quest to save Kekana’s scorcher.

Kekana, a former Bloemfontein midfielder, set the PSL record when he scored seven goals in one match in 2012 when Sundowns demolished SAB League club Powerlines FC.

Asked how he felt about winning the award, Kekana said he was happier that Sundowns were crowned PSL champions than he was about his win.

“I am a team player and winning the league for the first time is awesome. The Absa-lutely Awesome Goal of the Season is the cherry on top and it boosted my confidence to continue shooting from a distance,” said the Zebediela-born star.

The Rock, as Kekana is affectionately known in football circles, is not new to scoring long range goals. He scored a volley, which secured a win for Bafana Bafana during the opening match of the 2014 Africa Nation Championships against Mozambique.
