Indian festival in Limpopo celebrates cultures
Local and international artists entertained the audience at the Limpopo leg of the India Festival in South Africa at Library Gardens recently.
POLOKWANE – Local and international artists entertained the audience at the Limpopo leg of the India Festival in South Africa at Library Gardens recently.
The Indian community and people from other cultures attended the festival.
According to a media statement released by the department of arts and culture, South Africa enjoys a long-standing cordial relationship with the government and people of India that has been solidified by the agreement on cooperation in the fields of education, arts, culture and sport since 1996. The festival formed part of the implementation of the agreement that both countries would hold reciprocal cultural festivals in each other’s country to implement the programme of cooperation to promote social cohesion and cultural diversity in both countries. Members from the high council in India attended the event, while local dignitaries included the deputy minister for arts and culture, Rejoice Mabudafhasi, MEC for sport, arts and culture, Nandi Ndalane, MEC for transport, safety and liaison, Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana and the Capricorn mayor, Gilbert Kganyago. There were two groups who performed at the festival, the Polokwane Performing Arts Ensemble and an Indian dance group from India.
Members from the Performing Arts Ensemble performed two plays, one about South African history and the other about the announcement of Nelson Mandela’s death.
The Indian dance group performed Nrityarupa, which included six different Indian dances: Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Chhau, Odissi, Manipuri and Kathakali.
