A two-day introductory workshop on creative writing, to take place at the Polokwane Library on January 26 and January 30.

THE stage is set for what promises to be an insightful two-day introductory workshop on creative writing, to take place at the Polokwane Library on January 26 and January 30.

The event is billed to start at 09:00 until 16:00 on both days. This introductory session forms part of an envisaged practical six-month writer development programme, an intensive practical creative writing course planned to run from January to June, which will coincide with the literary fair that the Polokwane Municipality hosts annually.

Polokwane Literary Fair director, Malose Lekganyane, said the practical writing course was aimed at nurturing Limpopo’s latent creative writing talents in the genres of prose and poetry in all of the province’s official languages. “The course will be facilitated by much-esteemed creative writing coaches who are familiar with the context of South African writing in all its various traditions and forms,” Lekganyane said.

Lekganyane further said the course was designed to cover several aspects of creative writing such as the best ways to start and develop a sustained writing practise, the value of revision, feedback, critical reading and editing.

“The programme consists of a series of writing and reading exercises designed to develop essential aspects of the creative writer’s craft,” Lekganyane said.

The benefits of this course could include the ability to conduct research in a planned and timely way, the ability to apply creative and innovative solutions to everyday life’s challenges, confidence enhancement, leadership, communication and the development of a sharpened awareness of social problems within the environment both locally and globally.

Legendary writer and poet, Khomotjo “Peace” Sebone is one of the crowd-pulling artists who will be attending the eagerly anticipated event.

“Events like these come rarely and one would jump at the opportunity of being part of it. By the look of it, it promises to be very enlightening,” Sebone said.
