POLOKWANE – Cancer.vive hosts another successful campaign to motivate all that the can survive cancer.

The fifth annual Cancer.vive Awareness ride kicked off on 10 September with the main purpose to educate communities across South Africa on how to identify cancer and treat it.

More than 65 cancer survivors, supporters, media and emergency services will take on the 2 300 km route, going through towns to inform residents on how to notice cancer at an early stage and get medical help.

“The project makes use of performing arts, music, poetry, dance and storytelling to deliver the message of survival,” says Christoff Swanepoel, spokesperson of Canca.vive.

“There are so many people in our country that know nothing to very little about cancer, and to hear the survivors’ stories brings insight into their lives.”

By sharing information about cancers people are very shy of, like breast cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and colon cancer; and establishing support systems in the communities, patients are equipped to notice the warning signs.

“Cancer.vive is a special awareness and education project from People Living With Cancer (PLWC). PLWC is a non-profit organisation established by cancer survivors.

“The project aims to educate people about the early detection of cancer and offer support to people and their families living with this illness,” says Swanepoel.

Over the past four years, the awareness ride reached over 180 000 people in eight provinces speaking seven languages over a distance of 10 000 km.

Spar and Revlon are the main sponsors along with Triumph, Caltex, Imperial Ford & Mazda, Meadow Feeds and Netcare 911.
