Pocket money is money that you get that you can spend. It may be that your parents and caregivers give you some every now and again, or you may get a regular amount of money, for example every week or once a month. Some families give pocket money for Christmas or on birthdays, but some people have to save throughout the year. Pocket money can be spent on what you want. Most children are given pocket money to see if they can handle money and find out how much things cost

Review asked Polokwane residents whether they saved their pocket money so they could spend it during the festive season.
Eloise Maree said she only saved money towards Christmas time.
“My dad always gives me money and I make sure I spend it wisely, money doesn’t grow on trees so I have to be careful with it.”
Christelle Smit said her savings came from part-time jobs that she had in order to get more money to spend during the festive season.
Jackson Ledwaba said he didn’t save money, he instead shopped around for good prices and used what he had during Christmas.
“I am not a big spender, I always wait for sales then buy my Christmas things.”
Leoni Oliver said she saved two months before Christmas, but money could never be enough.
“I’m a big spender, I cannot pass a shop without buying something, so I think I should have a savings account, where I can start saving from the beginning of the year.”
