Marula Festival to welcome international guests

Limpopo is poised to receive a high volume of visitors during the Marula Festival, given the calibre of artists who will perform during the eight-day event that is set to commence in Phalaborwa from 19 to 28 February

POLOKWANE – The Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (Ledet) announced that revellers can prepare for a thrilling and much improved festival.

According to the communications manager of the Limpopo Tourism Agency, Mike Tauatsoala, the festival will commence on 19 February with a street carnival comprising various cultural groups, including the South African National Defence Force.

On 20 February, the festival will start with an open-air music concert that will, among others feature artists like Cassper Nyovest, Ricky Rick, AKA, Emtee, Heavy K, Durban Nyts, Nathi, Mmatema, Oskido, Karabo, AB Crazy, Ms Cosmo, Kaleido, Zinhle, Professor, Eddie Crook, Deeper Bus, Thallix, Blinks, X Man, Fiona and Master Pule.

Four chefs will prepare a four-course meal for dignitaries at a dinner hosted by the MEC of Ledet, Seaparo Sekoati.

The organisers have a busy line-up for the festival, which include the following:

• Brewing of marula beer from 18 to 27 February at Ba-Phalaborwa municipal lapa.

• Box and dine (boxing tournament) on 19 February at Impala Park stadium hall

• Youth (bulletjie) rugby (Bulletjies) on 20 February at Groen Skool in Phalaborwa.

• Hip hop/kwaito concert from 20 to 21 February at the Impala Park stadium.

• Golf challenge from 19 to 20 February at Hans Merensky Golf Estate.

• Cuisine a la Marula on 20 February at the park in Phalaborwa.

• Career expo from 22 to 26 February at the Impala Park stadium.

• Exhibition from 24 to 26 February in Phalaborwa.

• Half marathon and fun run on 27 February at Bollanoto Tourism Information Centre.

• Gospel and jazz festival on 27 February at the Impala Park stadium.

“This time the festival will have a considerable contingent of international guests from Cuba, China and Russia while a big number will be from Mozambique and other SADC countries. The benefit of this is that the festival will be filmed and broadcast in countries such as Cuba and Latin America,” Tauatsoala said.

Tickets for both open-air concerts are already available at Computicket for a subsidised amount of R100. This time there will also be a VIP marquee and tickets can be purchased for R2 000 per person.
