Dezry Kay stands out for ability to mix music
What sets Desiree Karabo Kekana - better known as Dezry Kay - apart from other artists is her ability to fuse different genres of music in the same set and blend them in so well that the crowd is unaware of the transition
POLOKWANE – Dezry Kay from Ga-Molepo was introduced to this industry 23 years ago. She is the founder of Limpo-Rhym. Her sound can be defined as commercial hip-hop fused with dance-floor thumping melodies crafted in English, Sepedi, Zulu, Afrikaans, Sesotho and Hindu.
She said she was also seen weekly on SABC 2 as a participant on educational reality show, It’s for Life. “Music and a career in the industry is hereditary for me, my blood is laced with the DNA of a successful singer mom and a revered musician father. My musical journey was a prenatal and mandatory destiny.”
The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’s theme of Feel it it’s here resonated well with the beautiful and talented Dezry Kay as I was performing for soccer mad crowds at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg,” Kekana said.
She has released singles in the underground scene to perfect my Limpo-Rhym and as a market research strategy. “Rea Batsena is one of the singles that received generous air-play time on both local and regional radio stations,” she said.
She told Express her beauty and musical gift has graced Umhlobo Wenene FM’s Phumzile Zonke’s Jaiva Mzansi Show, Metro FM, Sunday Sun, SABC 1’s YO TV Extension 4, and ETV’s breakfast show Sunrise. “I am proud that I once performed for President Jacob Zuma at the Union Buildings on Freedom Day, and shared the stage with big names such as Judith Sephuma, Black Motion, Dr Malinga, and DJ Warras,” she said.
“Being the founder of Limpo-Rhym sets me apart from other hip-hop acts as I am and will always be the reigning queen of the genre.”
She always tries to promote her province and her country, she said. “I believe in inspiring young women in South Africa, which is why I am the Associate Producer of Miss Dance-Fly, together with my best friend Nhlawulo Nhlavutelo Shikwambane, the Campaign Producer, to use beauty as an effective tool to fight domestic violence,” she said.
She further said the song Hunk is a hip-hop song in English, Hindu and Sepedi. “Hunk is about a girl who is dating a very sexy and muscular guy and is very happy since she is being treated likes a queen whilst society assumes hunks are abusive and cheaters. It’s an ideal situation that makes a woman happy, confident, productive and beautiful,” she concluded.
