Jump on the best ride in town
Getting from point A to Z on a motorcycle in the city is catching on in a big way in Polokwane, especially as it is a more economical and easier way to jump mid-morning traffic
POLOKWANE – President of Sapa Yopa Motorcycle Club, Sarel Nong talks about the best bike to ride.
“The first thing you need to do when you think of buying a bike is to decide why you want to buy it. Do you want it for social riding, do you want to make it part of your lifestyle or will it just be a form of transportation?” Sarel says.
When you choose a bike for a school going child, it is important for parents to consider what type of person the child is. He recommends a 125 cc as the best to start off with for a youngster.
“A 125 cc is an easy bike to ride as it is light. It is perfect for a beginner biker and helps to develop balance, which is imperative,” he says.
When it comes to adults, a first-time rider can start with a 300 cc to 350 cc, he advises. These are available at most motorcycle dealers in the city and are growing in popularity.
“If you are over 35 years old, consider buying a 900 cc cruiser as it is a bike you can continue to drive for a long period. Speed bikes will typically appeal to the younger ones, and they need a quick reaction when riding,” Sarel says.
“It is crucial that whatever you decide on, you feel comfortable and safe.”
Protective clothing should at least include gloves, a proper helmet and a biking jacket.
Even though bikers from 16 to 18 years can ride a motorcycle up to 125 cc with a learner driver’s licence, and anyone from 18 years and old can do so up to 250 cc, it is much better to make sure you have a full driver’s licence, Sarel advises.
“The best way to go about it is to get a learner’s licence to start with, then buy your bike and learn to ride it in a place that is safe. Once you have mastered your new wheels, you should go for your driver’s test.”
It is important for a motorcyclist to be insured and check the insurance prerequisites with the insurer, he adds.
