Producing addictive hits

For these "junkies", music takes precedence over everything

POLOKWANE – Good Music Junkies (GMJ) started out as a dream, now this music making team is taking over the local scene.

GMJ is a record label company founded by Kabelo Montjani, the mixing and mastering producer, and Phillimon Mosoga, the artist.

Initially making use of borrowed equipment, the dynamic duo decided to save up enough money to buy their own and GMJ came into its own.

Supporting several new and upcoming artists such as Motatši Oom Joe Mantsho, Rhulani Dala-D Risiba, Emmanuel Egg Head Hlako (producer), Abraham Raps and Effects Rammekwa, Thapelo Volovolo Shibambu, Martin Lemarty Ludah Mahangu, Luthando Manzini, and Siphiwe.

Kabelo and Phillimon decided on GMJ as the name of their label in 2012, which they officially established in January 2015 when they signed a variety of artists and producers.

Along with the record label, GMJ also formed a group, Moshito Rap Culture (MRC) where they signed artists from different cultures in a bid to merge all South African music tastes and cultures.

Thus far they have performed free at local events and schools to get their name out into the music industry and to grow a fan base. “Instead of waiting for sponsors we decided to get the wheel rolling by selling T-shirts and CD’s to generate enough funds to grow our music locally,” Kabelo explains.

They have a new album in the works which will feature some of their hot tracks such as Skipa, jean le bathu and #Fees must fall, and is set to be released by the end of the year.

The duo said it is their aim to breathe new life into African music and bring it back to our radios and TV screens. “We appreciate the value of education and that is why we do not sign artists who dropped out of school, anyone interested in signing with our label must at least have a high school education.

We advise young aspiring artists to read books and write their music before actually going into studio, that way they will never go wrong,” Kabelo concludes.
