Talking all things health on Energy FM

This week we get to know Energy FM's gynaecologist, Dr Hlengane Joseph Maluleke, who does health talk conversations on the show every Thursday between 19:00 and 20:00.

POLOKWANE – • What is the most odd thing you find about dealing solely with female patients as a male doctor? Bokgoni, Masealama.

“There’s nothing I find odd in me being male and tending to female patients. The relationship between a doctor and a patient is always a professional one and does not have to be influenced by gender. Remember, general practitioners see female patients too.”

• When a patient is moody (something that’s common with females) do you have a technique to calm them down? Maphotla, Thabakgone.

“The nature of a doctor’s work largely entails dealing with moody, distressed and emotional patients. The most important thing in this situation is to carefully listen to the source of the problem and empathise with the patient. Most of the time one finds that a listening ear obviates the need for medication.”

• I am a 30-year-old woman and I’m having a recurring Bartholin’s gland cyst. I have visited about two gynaecologists with no solution. Any advice? Anonymous.

“A recurring Bartholin’s gland cyst can be cured by the complete removal of the Bartholin gland itself.”

• What do you love most about your job? Tryphina, Seshego Zone 1.

“The job of a gynaecologist is demanding and challenging at times. It is also a branch of medicine that is very fulfilling in terms of making a huge difference in individuals and couples, especially in those that struggle to have children.

“Doctors who choose to specialise in this discipline do so because of the personal satisfaction they get after helping a couple to conceive, deliver a healthy baby, prevent gynaecological cancers, and the prevention of an unwanted pregnancy among others.”

• Do you ever get tempted? Thabz, Flora Park

“Doctors are taught to maintain high standards of professionalism and ethical practice. This enables doctors to respect the working space and avoid temptation as much as possible.”
