The management and members of Seshego Polokwane Taxi Association (SPTA), through their corporate social investment programme, handed over 80 pairs of shoes and 80 packs of sanitary towels to impoverished learners attached to the Pholosho, Ikageng, Selati and Re-Phologile drop-in centres on Sunday.
At the event held at Ngoako Ramahlodi Sports Complex in Seshego, Deputy Secretary of the Association, Dikeledi Morapi said the donation will restore the dignity and lift the morale of the learners based at the centres. “We were touched by the plight of needy learners in most of the drop-in-centres in Seshego. We saw their need and we reacted immediately. Some learners go to school with wornout shoes, some go barefoot and it is not a good image at all. We want them to look decent and be on par with other learners at their schools,” Morapi said.
Chairperson Solly Ledwaba said the gesture was their way of giving back to the community.
“This is us appreciating the learners and their caregivers. Irrespective of their circumstances, they are our biggest clientele. They use our vehicles for transport and they also function in our area of operation. We hope that the donation will make a difference in their lives and enable them to study and enjoy life without hindrances,” he said.
Rose Phala, a caregiver at Phologo, thanked the association for reaching out to their female learners. “The sanitary towels will come in handy. We do have sanitary products at the centre but sometimes it is not enough for everyone. We are grateful to the SPTA and believe they will continue their good work,” Phala said.
Salome Hiine from Ikageng said the school shoes will come as a relief to the learners based at the centre. “Some of the learners here do not have proper shoes yet never stopped attending their classes. The shoes will definitely bring smiles of their faces. We are glad to be close to an association that cares about children,” she said.
