With cyber bullying, human trafficking and job scams seemingly being on the rise, Mrs Polokwane finalist Pearl Sekwati have embarked on a journey to educate people about the dangers of the internet, especially social media platforms, during a Cyber Safety workshop she will be hosting at a hospitality venue in the city on Saturday.
Sekwati said the aim was to raise awareness about safety on the internet. She added that the abuse that is happening on social media was getting out of hand and reiterated that the workshop would educate attendees on some of the legal roots they can use to report such incidents to law enforcers. Bullying can force one into depression, she stressed and added that it was vital for parents to learn about challenges faced by their children on the internet.
“People use the internet to scam others. They can also lure unsuspecting victims to a venue and later kidnap them. Internet safety is a major concern and as a result we have to share tips to save lives. People should know that they can open criminal cases when they are being bullied or threatened on social media.” The workshop is open to all at no cost.
She further stated that attendees will receive goodie bags and win other amazing prizes such as a trip to Mpumalanga. Sekwati concluded by saying she was also collecting fashionable dresses to be donated to underprivileged learners in rural schools for them to wear to their prom nights.
