Back to school uniform debate: To buy or not to buy?
Are new school uniforms a necessity or luxury? Parents and students share thoughts on affordability, peer pressure, and sustainability.

POLOKWANE –Â The first day of school is eagerly anticipated by many learners, who look forward to reuniting with their friends after a long break.
This excitement raises concerns for some parents, especially those who struggle financially and may not be able to purchase new uniforms for their children.
Some students believe that having a new school uniform at the start of each year is essential, while others feel that as long as their old uniform is still in good condition, there is no need for a new one.
“To me, having a new uniform every year isn’t important because I believe that if someone knows how to take care of themselves, they can definitely keep their uniform looking clean,” says student Refiloe Moshidi.
Some parents express that they cannot afford to buy new uniforms each year and that their children should learn to maintain their clothing in good condition.
“I think it’s important for us parents to sit down with our kids and explain that sometimes it’s difficult to purchase new uniforms due to financial constraints, and they shouldn’t compare themselves to others,” remarked Precious Sekobane.
