Students from several Capricorn College for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (Tvet) are up in arms at the central office in the city at the moment (Thursday) demanding accommodation, groceries and transport allowances, text books and for the library to operate 24 hours.
Polokwane Observer was on the scene and had spotted students from city campus, Seshego and Ramokgopha campuses led by their respective Student Representative Council (SRC) presidents. Police are closely monitoring the situation from their vehicles and Police chopper making rounds at the scene.
Congress of South African Students (Cosas) Capricorn Regional Chairperson Sello Mahladisa indicated that the strike was about the alleged corruption in the finance department at the central office because students have been struggling to get allowances since last year.
He reiterated that some students are still struggling to get their certificates despite the fact that they had paid school fees. Students from Ramokgopha campus complain about poor infrastructure and lack of accommodation as the the SRC deputy chairperson, Thapelo Bopape claimed that students are forced to engage in sexual activities with lecturers to have a place to stay.
Capricorn College for Tvet Public Relations Officer, Tumelo Morobe was contacted for comment during the strike but he indicated that he was unable to speak as they were busy addressing the angry crowd. Read full story in next week’s edition of Polokwane Observer.
