BREAKING NEWS: Uproar: Mankweng taxi drivers demand a promotion

Taxi drivers affiliated to Mankweng Taxi Association began creating commotion as they blocked the road at the Nobody intersection on the R71 earlier this morning (Thursday) while demanding that 30 of the drivers be promoted by the association and the owners in order to enable them to buy their own taxis.
While on the scene Polokwane Observer spotted Police vehicles patrolling the area to keep the peace. The strike seemed peaceful as the drivers allowed private vehicles and taxis not affiliated to the association. Drivers observed that the association has to promote those who have worked for over ten years to become owners but that office bearers are now dragging their feet.
It was said that over 30 drivers qualify to be promoted and members threatened to continue with the strike until their demands are met, adding that things might get out of hand if the association does not deliver.
Mankweng Taxi Association Chairperson Phillip Molepo emphasised that the owners had agreed to promote ten drivers but the drivers were against that, adding that there was no way that many drivers could be promoted. He further said drivers don’t want the promotion but a fight and informed that he had called a mass meeting for tomorrow (Friday) to discuss the situation.
