Secunda Court grants bail to former Home Affairs workers

The two women were granted bail of R7 000 each.

Secunda Magistrate’s Court granted bail of R7 000 each to two former Department of Home Affairs employees, based in Secunda, on July 1.

They are Portia Mtshweni (41) and Nondumiso Maboyi (40).

Mtshweni was arrested on April 30, while Maboyi later handed herself over to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in Secunda.

According to allegations, the pair assisted in the fraudulent issuance of South African identity documents and birth certificates to foreign nationals.

Investigators allege that South African identity documents were unlawfully issued to four Zimbabwean nationals and one Mozambican national.

In addition, a Zimbabwean child allegedly received a fraudulent South African birth certificate, while the child’s mother reportedly obtained a South African identity document through fraudulent means.

The two accused were previously granted bail of R3 000 each in May. However, they were subsequently re-arrested in connection with another case involving alleged fraud and corruption related to the processing of identity documents.

Their case was postponed to July 13 for further investigation.
