Tshwane residents warned to use water sparingly

Water consumption has increased drastically over the past few weeks, which resulted in reservoirs reaching critical levels.

Residents in the west part of Pretoria have once again been urged to conserve water to avoid service interruption, Centurion Rekord reports.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said this was due to an increase in water consumption.

“We have received yet another notification from Rand Water that water consumption has increased drastically over the past few weeks, which resulted in reservoirs reaching critical levels. Some of reservoirs are already as low as 29%,” he said.

He said the recent decrease could be laid on the high temperatures currently experienced but insisted that Tshwane residents should also be mindful of their water consumption.

Rand Water has begun to restrict Tshwane meters.

If the call to save water is not heeded there will be water interruption especially in the following areas:

  • Ga-Rankuwa industrial sites
  • Mabopane
  • Ga-Rankuwa
  • Akasia Park
  • Kruisfontein
  • Brakfontein
  • Thaba Tshwane
  • Blair Athol
  • Pretoria West
  • Sunnyside
  • Arcadia
  • Meintjieskop
  • Pretoria (CBD)
  • Wonderboom
  • Saulsville
  • Erasmia

Residents are reminded of the following hints that were provided in terms of the partial restrictions that the Tshwane metro announced in May last year:

  • Use grey water for watering gardens and flushing toilets.
  • Report water leaks and burst pipes.
  • Install water-saving devices.
  • Where possible, install a low-flow showerhead and tap aerators.
  • Use a dual-flush toilet cistern.
  • Plant indigenous or drought-resistant shrubs in the garden.
  • Water gardens before 06:00 or after 18:00 and only when necessary.
  • Use a broom instead of a hosepipe to clean driveways or patios.
  • Collect rainwater for re-use in the garden or for washing the car.
  • Cover the swimming pool to reduce evaporation.
  • Take a shower rather than a bath.
  • Close a running tap while brushing teeth or shaving.
  • Regularly check toilets and taps for leaks.
