An 11-year-old child was apprehended at a local supermarket on Saturday after passing counterfeit R100 notes as legal tender.
Management had discovered a false R100 note the previous day and all cashiers were alerted to be on the lookout.
On Saturday morning the youngster presented a R100 note as payment for a toy he had hoped to buy. The cashier noticed that the money was false and informed her supervisor who in turn notified the manager on duty. The boy was taken to the manager’s office and the police were called in.
CCTV footage revealed that the youngster was the same person who had passed through the pay point where the false money had been discovered the previous day.
Police then went to the boy’s home to search for more counterfeit bills, but none were found. The child is in the care of an aunt as his mother lives in Pretoria.
Police are investigating further.
