eMBALENHLE – A 63-year-old man appeared in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 November for allegedly raping his neighbour’s 12-year-old daughter.
He was arrested last week after police were informed that the man has been raping the girl for about a year.
A 32-year-old man also appeared in court on Friday, 22 November for allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman on the morning of 16 November.
The woman was apparently coming from the tavern in Extension 14 when a group of men inside a vehicle stopped her.
Capt Magonseni Nkosi, spokesman for the local police, said one of the men was found by the police while he was raping the woman in the street.
Two men will appear for a bail hearing in the court on 27 November for allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman in Extension 22 last weekend when she was coming from a tavern.
One man was arrested on the scene by the police and the other one was arrested later.
Capt Nkosi said they have been working tirelessly since the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children to ensure a decrease in such incidents.
He urged women to stop walking at night from or to taverns.
Women must take note of the following tips:
* Avoid walking alone as much as possible.
Your best defence is having other people nearby.
* If you walk alone, plan your route carefully.
Notice stores that are open should you need to ask for help.
* Stay in well-lit areas as much as possible.
* Walk on the side of the street facing traffic.
* If you work late, do not go to your car alone if you can avoid it.
Ask somebody to escort you.
* Have your keys ready when you approach your car or home and enter immediately.
* Do not leave food or drinks unattended in public places.
* Do not accept drinks or food from strangers.
They could be spiked.
* Do not leave a party or a social event with someone you do not know or have just met.
* Do not hitchhike.
* When you get home and find that a door or a window has been forced open while you were absent, do not enter.
Call the police.
* Never allow people you do not know into your house.
* Rape victims should always report the incident to the police immediately.
