KRIEL – The Kriel Magistrate’s Court sentenced Thabo Vuyisile Sikhakhane (28) for fraud on 28 November.
He was arrested at a grocery outlet when he purchased airtime worth R1 700 as well as other items using a fraudulent bank card.
Once the transaction was successful, he wanted to buy several other items.
The cashier grew suspicious and Sikhakhane realised this.
He tried to flee, but was stopped by the store’s security guards.
During the police investigation, it was discovered that the card was stolen at Orange Farm in February along with other personal items and a case was opened.
Sikhakhane was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
W/O Emmarancia Kgosana, communications officer of the Kriel Police, said: “We would like to warn the community about these card scams.
“They should be cautious when using ATMs, refrain from using ATMs in quiet places, do not give your personal belongings to anyone, do not carry bank cards, IDs, passports or driver’s licenses in the same wallet, do not give out your pin code to anyone, avoid withdrawing money from ATMs when you are alone or withdrawing large amounts of money, never accept help from strangers, do not force your card into the card slot and if you suspect you have been followed or see anything suspicious, avoid using the ATM.
“Also ensure that your card is returned from the machine and do not count your money at ATMs or while walking or sitting in an unlocked car, especially during the festive season.”
