Man stabbed with screwdriver

Family pet alerts home owner of an intruder.

SECUNDA – Ms Maureen Slabbert was alerted by her pet bird that an intruder was inside her caravan on Monday, 10 February at 9am.

She heard her bird squeaking and went to see what was upsetting it.

She could not find anything and returned to her home.

She then heard a noise coming from the back of the house where the caravan is parked.

Ms Slabbert saw an intruder in the caravan and quietly returned to the house to phone her husband and the police.

Her husband, Mr Frederik (Duif) Slabbert, was the first to arrive.

“When my husband got home, we were both very quiet and I showed him where the intruder was.

“We used a knob kierrie for protection and went to the caravan.

“We noticed the caravan window was broken and an umbrella was lying on the floor.

“In the meantime we could hear the fiddling going on inside the caravan,” Ms Slabbert said.

Mr Slabbert saw the intruder’s feet coming through the window.

He tried to block the intruder inside the caravan with the kierrie, but the intruder managed to get out.

He pulled a screwdriver from his pocket and began stabbing at Mr Slabbert.

Mr Slabbert was stabbed five times.

The police arrived and found the intruder stabbing Mr Slabbert.

He was apprehended and arrested.

Mr Slabbert said: “If the police did not arrive when they did, I think I would have been stabbed to death.

“We want to thank the police for their fast response and the compassion and kindness that they had shown my wife and me.”

The couple also thanked their family and friends for their support and kind wishes.

Lt Battina Zondo, communications officer for the police, said: “My colleagues and I were monitoring the municipal strike when we received the call.

“When we arrived at the house, we found the suspect trying to stab Mr Slabbert.

“We arrived just on time because it could have been fatal if otherwise.”

The man faces charges of housebreaking with the intent to steal, as well as a charge of causing grievous bodily harm.

He appeared in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 13 February and was denied bail.
