Sasol takes the “safety first” principle to schools

Sasol donated more than 260 scholar patrol reflective bibs and whistles to the Mpumalanga Provincial Government, Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison.

SECUNDA – The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) received a donation of more than 260 scholar patrol reflective bibs and whistles on Monday, 10 February at Highveld Ridge Primary School.

The DCSSL has identified 47 schools in the Govan Mbeki municipal area that are in need of scholar patrols.

The scholar patrols are supervised by an adult at all times, preferably a teacher or an adult volunteer appointed by the Local or Provincial Government.

Ms Maureen Mboshane, general manager of Public Affairs for Sasol, said: “Safety is a top priority at Sasol and the safety of children in our communities is important.

“This equipment enables scholar patrols to be implemented at 47 schools in the Govan Mbeki Metropolitan area that have been prioritised.”

Sasol invested R593.2 million in education, job creation, health and welfare, the environment and arts and culture last year.

Sasol Mining invested R17.8 million as part of its social and labour plans (SLP) and at the end of 2013 Sasol announced its R800 million Ikusasa public private partnership with the Mpumalanga and Free State provincial governments and R24 million has been invested in disaster management and crime prevention programmes.

These programmes contribute to government’s interventions against child and gender violence.

Ms Mboshane said: “Investing in the communities in which we operate is a strategic priority for Sasol.

“The company’s community affairs programme seeks to promote people-centred and needs-driven sustainable development of the people in the community.”
