SECUNDA – The local police are concerned about the number of house burglaries that are on the increase in the Secunda area.
They are appealing to the community to be more vigilant and report any suspicious activity that may be happening in and around the area.
W/O Thulani Gamede, communications officer for the police, said: “You can never be too careful when it comes to the safety and security of your family and home.
“Do not leave anything outside that can be an invitation to a would-be robber.
“In some cases, the home owner would buy new technology, such as a television or entertainment theatre and leave the boxes outside for waste removals to remove it.
“Burglars walk past and see that you have purchased something of value and wait for the right moment to break into your home and steal those items.”
He appealed to the community to discard of any boxes or packaging in some other way that will not be visible or an invitation for burglars.
He went on to say residents need to keep their garages and tool sheds locked when not in use.
Intruders should not have access to any item that can be used as a weapon or burglary tool.
Here are some useful tips:
* At night always lock perimeter doors and securely fasten windows.
* When retiring to bed, lock inter-leading doors of those rooms that are not occupied.
* Do not leave curtains open at night as this allows observation into the house.
* Do not go outside alone to investigate at night. Rather switch off all lights and open curtains to allow you to see what is happening outside.
* Do not open any perimeter door without satisfactory identification from the visitor. If in any doubt, do not open the door and call the police or security company.
* Never admit to a stranger that you are alone.
* If you note suspicious vehicles, individuals or groups in your neighbourhood, contact the police or security company.
* Do not leave garage, front or back door open or partially open as it serves as an invitation to burglars.
* A watchdog is a good early warning system. Unexpected death of a watchdog is a warning sign of possible burglary.
* Install security gates at outside doors and keep them locked. If possible, fix a door viewer and latch chain.
* When approaching your home, be aware of your surroundings and ensure that it is safe to enter an that you have not been followed.
* Keep entrances clear of plants or obstacles that can provide a hiding place for would-be robbers.
* Know your neighbours and build a relationship of mutual trust and support. When going away on holiday, inform them or make arrangements for your home to be watched.
