Pupils taught about dangers of unprotected sex

“Make informed choices and abstain from drugs and sex before marriage and fear God.”

eMBALENHLE – Pupils from Kiriyatswane Secondary School held a teenage pregnancy awareness campaign on Friday, 23 May.

It was aimed at educating pupils about challenges teenagers face, such as teen pregnancy, HIV and Aids and substance abuse.

This was an initiative of a group of pupils who approached the Department of Health, the police and other stakeholdrs to help them begin the campaign.

Pupils were warned about the dangers of unprotected sex and substance abuse.

They were encouraged not to risk their lives and to think of the consequences before they do anything irresponsible.

Mr Vusi Mkhwanazi, chairman of the eMbalenhle Clinics Health committee, said teenage pregnancy is a serious concern as eMbalenhle is rating number one in Mpumalanga.

He said pupils should abstain from having sex and if they fail, they should at least practice safe sex.

Pupils performed educational dramas and other activities, such as music and poetry to raise awareness about teen pregnancy.

Mr Mduduzi Mahlangu, former pupil of Kiriyatswane who is now a motivational speaker, encouraged pupils through his story of being in prison for 10 years.

“A well-lived life is lived without regrets.

“The issue of teen pregnancy can be solved, but it is only up to you as teenagers.

“Make informed choices and abstain from drugs and sex before marriage and fear God.”
