Police educate residents
The Evander Police and CPF have launched a campaign which is aimed at address shoplifting and theft.
EVANDER – The Community Police Forum (CPF) and the police conducted a campaign in the business areas because of the high increase of theft and shoplifting recently.
It was aimed at educating residents about the consequences of these crimes, especially school pupils.
Sgt Sibusiso Mbuli, spokeman for the Evander Police Station, said: “The campaign focused mainly on pupils as they are mostly responsible for such crimes.
“Shoplifting results in a criminal record that can spoil the future of a pupil.
“We were teaching them to refrain from shoplifting.”
The CPF and the police also visited various schools and conducted child protection awareness campaigns.
“The child protection awareness was mostly based on addressing substance abuse as it is a big challenge in Evander.
“We ask that residents cooperate with the police as Evander has become a hub for drug suppliers,” said Sgt Mbuli.
He also asked that landlords do a background check on people who apply to rent from them because the drug lords are renting many houses in Evander.
Sgt Mbuli said the campaign will continue until crime in Evander decreases.
