SECUNDA – John Dory’s is collecting non-perishable foods, toys and blankets for a good cause and invited residents to support them with this initiative in celebration of Mandela Day.
“Winter is here and while for most of us that means warm, hearty meals and the cosy comforts of snug clothing and blankets, many are not that lucky,” said Ms Lynn du Toit, operating partner of John Dory’s Secunda.
“We are all too aware of how many people are vulnerable when the cold hits and we want to do our bit.
“Our efforts will be concentrated on helping Durban Children’s Home.
“These institutions do an amazing job of caring for orphaned, neglected and abused children, restoring the dignity and sense of the self and belonging they so badly need.
“What is even more admirable about these homes, is that while they do receive government funding, this is not nearly adequate.
“They raise most of the funds required to cover basic running costs themselves.
Ms Thina Hlophe, resource developer at Durban Children’s Home, beamed when she related some of the home’s successes, but admitted the challenges they face make it anything but smooth sailing.
“Our most critical challenge is not having enough funds to cover all the expenses budgeted for when it comes to the children in our care.
“The children’s biggest needs are mentorship and good role models, a sound education, food and dignified shelter,” said Ms Hlophe.
“We are extremely grateful for all and any contributions.”
According to Ms Du Toit, John Dory’s Secunda is keen to help by collecting any items which the homes are likely to need from non-perishable foods to toys and blankets.
“We would appreciate any kind of donation from patrons and the general public alike.
“No contribution is too small,” said Ms Du Toit.
Donations and contributions can be dropped off at John Dory’s from Mondays to Sundays between 10am to 10pm.
