SECUNDA – Clean water was wasted on Wednesday, 22 October in Lanzerac Street after contractors had damaged a water pipe and had contacted the municipality to fix it.
However, the municipality took more than four hours to send someone out.
Mr Encee van Huyssteen, DA councillor, investigated the scene and also tried to contact the municipality.
Water streamed down the street for hours and residents asked who is going to pay for the clean water that was wasted.
SMSs sent out said residents will not have water for three days and that Sasol will fix the pipe.
It could not be confirmed whether Sasol did fix the water pipe, but when the Echo and Ridge Times contacted the call centre of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, the operator confirmed that the municipality had sent out SMSs regarding the water, but only to residents who would have been affected.
The Echo and Ridge Times asked the head of Marketing and Communications, Mr Henry Masango, for comment as to why the municipality took so long to fix it and who is paying for the wasted water and he said: “Excavation has to be done first to repair a burst pipe and this can take some time to accomplish.”
