eMZINONI – Local police have plans in place to fight crime during the festive season.
Const Cynthia Mtsweni, police spokesman, said though there is an increase in housebreakings and that they are usually uncontrollable during holidays, the police will mobilise themselves to fight it.
“We have arrested numerous house break-in suspects and are still tracing others.
“We will launch various campaigns that address crime-related issues and other issues that perpetuate crime.”
Const Mtsweni encouraged communities to form neighbourhood watches, a key pillar in fighting crime in the community.
“Residents must unite and begin various crime forums and whistle blowing can help a lot.
“In case they apprehend any suspects, they should not commit mob justice.
“Beating suspects is a crime and can result in legal steps taken against the perpetrators.”
She urged residents to not leave their homes unattended when they go on holiday.
“People have a tendency to leave lights on when they go away, assuming that thieves will think there is someone home.
“Thieves now know that strategy, so whenever you go away rather ask someone to look after your house.”
