SECUNDA – Hawkers trading illegally on the sidewalks in the CBD are still a frustration to local shop owners and managers.
“These people take up all the space and there is no place for our clients to walk,” said a shop owner.
The hawkers also apparently use the gardens nearby as a toilet.
The hawkers were removed by the police before, but they returned the next day.
The newspaper asked the head of marketing and communications of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Henry Masango, for comment and he said: “All legal hawkers are assigned to specified trading spots and are being managed as such.
“Law enforcement will be intensified so as to eradicate these illegal vendors who are playing their trade everywhere.”
Mr Masango did not comment on when law enforcement will be intensified.
