KINROSS – Staff from the Highveld Ridge SPCA rescued a puppy that was stuck on an island in Kinross Dam on Thursday morning.
Residents contacted the SPCA on Wednesday night and said there was a storm in Kinross and after the storm they noticed the puppy on the island.
SPCA staff went to investigate and saw the puppy in the middle of the dam but could not find a boat to save it.
According to Ms Jenneth Geel, senior inspector at the Highveld Ridge SPCA, the puppy was sleeping when they saw it on the island on Wednesday night.
SPCA staff returned the next morning, but still could not find a boat and Ms Louise van der Merwe went into the water and saved the puppy.
She used her children’s blow up boat to transport the puppy from the island to the side of Kinross Dam.
“It was starving when we got it, we fed it, cleaned it and the puppy fell asleep after that,” said Ms Geel.
The SPCA staff who helped in rescuing the puppy are Ms Van der Merwe, Ms Geel, Ms Palesa Mofokeng, Ms Pinky Shabangu and Ms Nonnie Sibanyoni.
The puppy will stay at the SPCA until its owners are found.
