Const Mogadime talks to pupils
The police, members from the CPF and Department of Social Development recently visited Young Harvest Christian School.
BETHAL – Police, members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the Department of Social Development recently visited Young Harvest Christian School.
The reason for the visit was to talk to the pupils about safety which is a part of the Back to School Campaign.
According to Const Thomas Mogadime, communications officer at Bethal Police, there are still 12 schools to go to this year.
He urged pupils not to climb in cars with strangers.
Members of the Department of Social Development talked about human trafficking.
Human Trafficking is the recruitment and/or the transportation of persons by others using violence or the threat of violence, abuse of authority or domination position, deception or other forms of coercion for the purpose of exploiting them sexually or economically for the profit or advantage of others.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that South African children are forced to provide unpaid labour for landowners in return for their family occupying land or accommodation, or maintaining labour tenancy rights.
Child sex tourism is prevalent in a number of South African cities.
Women and girls from other African countries are trafficked to South Africa for commercial sexual exploitation, domestic servitude and other jobs in the service sector.
Other purposes of the victims include:
* Ritual killings/human sacrifice to local African deities to acquire social and economic power (political power and wealth), as well as other fetish purposes, per some cultural beliefs. This practice is common in some African countries.
* Human body parts for sale in local and international black market. Body parts are used locally by native/juju (voodoo), witchcraft doctors in some African countries for fetish rituals. Internationally, body parts are reportedly sold to medical research institutions/hospitals needing human organs, among others.
* Child soldiers, and covert operations by insurgent outfits and rogue regimes.
* Terrorism
Const Mogadime said that children should not take chances and they must be careful.
Pamflets have been handed out to each pupil to give them more information about human trafficking.
