Police continue with their investigation into drownings.

eMBALENHLE – Police divers recovered the bodies of three family members aged between 20 and 24 who drowned in a local river on Monday, 9 February.

According to an eyewitness and family member, he and three men went to the river for a swim as they often did.

Two got into the water, but quickly got into trouble.

One of the others jumped into the water to try and rescue them, but to no avail.

All three men drowned.

“I noticed that they were all drowning and rushed home to ask neighbours for help.

“We realised it was too late when we arrived at the river and called the police,” said the family member.

Residents were not satisfied with the information given by the surviving family member and suspected that the men did not go for a swim.

“You cannot swim in this dirty river!

“It does not make sense.

“I think they did illegal mining,” said a resident who wanted to stay anonymous.

The men’s clothes and buckets were found next to the river.

The police also recovered a shovel in the river before the divers recovered the bodies.

They are investigating the drownings and could not yet release the names of the deceased at time of going to press.
