Pumps still not working
In most cases sewage flows directly into the Vaal River.
An employee of the Department of Water Affairs recently visited the different pumps station in Sakhile to determine the cause of sewage leakages.
Sewage has been a major issue in town, as well as in Sakhile.
In most cases it flows directly into the Vaal River.
At the pump station in Taljaard Street the pumping seals were worn out, as confirmed by the Lekwa Municipality, and as a result the sewage flowed under the bridge to the river.
New seals were installed on 22 January.
According to the employee the pipes are also not serviced and cause blockage and leakages.
The sewage is supposed to be cleaned at the treatment plant and then released to the river, but that is not happening.
The chlorine chamber is broken and workers can not put any chemicals in the chamber to clean the water.
The water is then released to the river as is.
According to the employee they have compiled a report to their regional office about the matter.
“I will wait for the response and the municipality will be given a directive on what to do.”
He also said the municipality will be given seven days to act after they have met with them, if they do not comply, further steps will be taken.
Mr Linda Tshabalala, Municipal Manager, said the municipality is currently focusing on any issue concerning sewage.
“We are done with the water, we are now concentrating on the sewage problems.”
He added that the municipality is concerned about the theft of cables and electric motors at the pump stations.
“People are stealing the electric motors that control the pumps and the cables at the pump stations.”
