Const Mabena calls on eMba residents not to commit mob justice
Police urge residents not to take the law into their own hands.
eMBALENHLE – Const Elizabeth Mabena, Sector 3 manager, harshly reprimanded angry residents of Extension 20 who were on the verge of closing down one of the foreign nationals’ shops.
This was after residents heard that the shop owner wanted to bribe one of them to kill a rival shop owner.
It is alleged that the shop owner had confronted the men to kill the other shop owner and later on one of the men allegedly decided to turn down the deal.
The shop owner accused the men of trying to rob him and they took him inside the shop and called the residents.
Residents wanted to beat the men and the men confessed about the deal with the shop owner.
The police were also called and they dispersed the crowd and took the men in for questioning.
Const Mabena said the police are investigating the matter and condemned the residents for intending to commit mob justice.
She said they must allow police to do their job and also not to take the law into their own hands.
“Mob justice is a serious crime and is not a solution to solve crimes.
“Do not continue with this practice, otherwise you will rot in jail.
“If you apprehend suspects, do not assault them, rather call the police.”
“You do not know the problem between the two business owners so refrain from interfering.
“Allow the police to make their investigation.”
She also thanked the residents for co-operating with the police and urged them not to fight.
Mr Nick Matabe, councillor, urged the residents to maintain peace and order in the community and at the same time to fight crime.
