740 athletes participate in Goldi 3-in-1 Marathon

Altogether 740 athletes flocked to Laerskool Standerton for the start and finish of the annual Goldi 3 in 1 Marathon on 21 March.

Altogether 740 athletes flocked to Laerskool Standerton for the start and finish of the annual Goldi 3-in-1 Marathon on 21 March.

It was a hive of activity on the school grounds with a local dancing club showing off there moves, horse rides for the kids and stalls with lots on offer.

“Goldi, a division of Astral, has sponsored the event for the past 15 years,” Mr Peter Daniel, chairman of the Standerton Marathon Club, said.

“The Standerton Marathon Club and the Standerton Lions Club host the event, which has been run every year since 1978.

“The clubs are extremely grateful for the contribution and support from Goldi.

“We would also like to thank all the companies that sponsored the water stations.”

First National Bank won the best water station award.

Athletes also used the marathon as a qualifier for the Comrades Marathon and according to Mr Daniel athletes still have time to qualify till 1 May.

• Doctor Zwane was the winner of the 10km race and completed the distance in a time of 31 min 52 sec, followed by Sifiso Mkhutshwa in 32 min 51 sec and Sello Mohoung in 32 min 52 sec.

Phumzile Maphalala was the first woman home in 47 min 11 sec.

• The 21.1km race was won by Amos Thangewayo in 1:08,32, with Philamon Mkwanazi in second in 1:08,52, with Thulani Manana in third place in 1:11,57.

The first woman home was Winili Mnisi in 1:31,30.

• Maseko Ntuthuko came in first in the 42.2km race in 2:24,49, followed by Sun Motheshipa in 2:30,29, with Bazil Masibuku third in 2:31,42.

Petro Steenkamp from Middelburg was the first woman home in 3:24,39.
