Evander Police are concerned about safety
Police are busy with internal investigation.
EVANDER – The police recovered the body of an alleged illegal miner on Wednesday, 1 April after he was shot during an armed robbery.I
llegal squatters of Amandla Settlement informed the police that they heard gun shots from one of the local shops.
The shop was closed and two armed men allegedly forced the man to open the door.
They stole cash, shot the man in the head and fled before the police arrived.
No one was arrested.
Amandla Settlement is located on the Bracken Mine Road between Evander and eMbalenhle.
Many motorists use this road to get to work and mine industries use it to transport heavy equipment between mine shafts.
About 20 people live in one shack in the settlement and they do peace jobs in surrounding areas.
Many of these squatters are from Lesotho and came to South Africa to work as contractors on the mines.
Sgt Sibusiso Mbuli, spokesperson of Evander Police, said that several cases of vehicle hijackings, armed robberies and rapes were recently opened at the police station and all of these crimes took place at the Amandla Settlement.
The police are busy with internal investigation in the area and asked the public to be cautious when they use the Bracken Mine Road.
People must contact the police when they see something or someone suspicious on this road.
