Eendracht old age home is neglected
The state some of the rooms are in, pose a health risk, especially to those tenants who already suffer from health problems associated with old age.
EENDRACHT – The old age home next to the licence department has apparently been neglected by the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
The building is in dire need of renovations and the fence and the carports need urgent fixing
.The ceilings in some of the rooms are also leaking.
Though the management often reports these problems to the municipality, nothing has been done so far.
The state some of the rooms are in, pose a health risk, especially to those tenants who already suffer from health problems associated with old age.
One of the tenants uses an oxygen machine and needs to be in a sterile room.
“I had to hire someone to paint the apartment, because the municipality did not come,” said a tenant.
The elderly said no one from the municipality comes to check whether they are safe, especially since there is an increase in housebreakings.
“They should at least come and inspect our apartments, even if it is once a year,” said Ms Lena Botha, a tenant of the Avondrus apartments.
The whole of Ms Botha’s apartment need urgent renovations, because of a roof leakage in all the rooms and the geyser is also not working properly.
It is clear that the elderly are trying to keep the place clean, but it is not possible for them to fund the renovations with their pension.
Mr Sakkie Pruis, a tenant, took over the yard and garden.
“When I arrived here, there were only six rose bushes and no lawn.
“I used my money to do all this work,” said Mr Pruis.
The garden now has 29 rose bushes and the lawn is cut.
