Osizweni pupils see science can be fun

Children learn about different science-related careers.

eMBALENHLE – Science pupils from Osizweni Secondary School had a great experience during their tour to the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA).

SAASTA is a business unit of the National Research Foundation and one of their aims is to build the quantity and quality of mathematics and science outputs at school level.

Ms Xoli Thabethe, science teacher at Osizweni Secondary School, said she was pleased that their pupils were exposed to SAASTA and they also learned about the different science-related careers that they can take.

Pupils said the visit boosted their morale and changed their attitude towards science and mathematics.

“We did science experiments and also learned how to make soft drinks, such as Coca Cola,” said Sipho Mahlangu, a Grade 11 science pupil. Most pupils said what stood out for them, was a mountain from which they they got a clear view of Johannesburg and seeing a telescope.

Sipho Mahlangu, a member of the Representative Council of Learners, said he wants to become a chemical engineer because he enjoys chemistry.
